Acupuncture is becoming an effective complementary and alternative therapy to help people give up smoking. Acupuncture is helping many smokers quit nicotine for good where other smoking cessation programs have failed. Using acupuncture treatment to help quit smoking can provide quick relief from the nicotine withdrawal. Acupuncture restores life energy, or qi, that flows through channels called meridians under the skin. Acupuncture needles unblock any energy that is not flowing freely through the 12 meridians. The subjects who received acupuncture that affected smoking habits found their desire to smoke was less than the control group. The study was confirmed by blood tests that showed fewer chemicals from smoking present in the blood of the group who had less desire for nicotine.

Acupuncture treatment for smoking cessation may also utilise acupressure and herbal remedies. A combination of herbs may be applied in the acupuncture points for faster results. An acupuncturist will also teach the patient acupressure techniques that can be used at home to pacify cravings.

Advantages of acupuncture when trying to quit smoking

People who have used acupuncture to stop smoking have found even the taste of nicotine to be unbearable after the therapy. Other side-effects that acupuncture relieves when trying to give up nicotine include depression and anxiety.

Physical improvements that acupuncture provides to smokers include increased blood circulation and clearer lungs and after a few sessions patients often find they begin to cough up phlegm. This is the body loosening tar and phlegm as it tries to decongest the lungs. The physical and emotional changes that occur after acupuncture give smokers a sense of optimism that increases their desire to quit even more.

Acupuncture has been known to give results after one or two sessions particularly with heavy smokers. A weekly session of acupuncture can have a big impact on the desire to smoke. A trained acupuncturist will ascertain an appropriate treatment time making adjustments to the methods as the therapy progresses.
